Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I read somewhere about a town where monkeys live right in town with the people. Once a year they hold a feast for the monkeys. I cannot find it now and hope you'll be able to tell me the name of it and where it is.

Answer: Dear Ms. Reynolds, Thank you for your interest in traveling to Thailand. The town's name is Lopburi. Lopburi was probably founded in pre-historical period until the Khemers who expanded their power to the town of Larvo dating from the 10th century and ruled over the area. In 1664, King Narai the Great, a King of Ayutthaya made Lop Buri the second capital with the help of French architects. Therefore, the architectural style of Lop Buri in the reign of King Narai was half Thai and half western. Today it is a modern garrison town and provincial capital 153 kms north of Bangkok.
You can get there by bus or a train. Both air-conditioned buses and non air-conditioned buses leave the Northern Bus Terminal (Mor chit 2) for Lop Buri every 15 minutes from 05.30 A.M. until 08.30 P.M. everyday.
Trains leave the Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) for Lopburi many times daily. Call 233-7010,233-7020 for further information.

Question: I am trying to plan my honeymoon, what time of the year is the best? Can you suggest a place to stay and things to do?

Answer: There are several great islands in Thailand that are worth visiting and some of them are even partly covered with beautiful natural parks. The biggest and the most famous island that is located in the south of Thailand is Phuket. It is a holiday place with many beautiful white sand beaches, but also hotels, bars, entertainment zones and tourists. Going from Bangkok, you may reach Phuket comfortably by the airplane where the flight takes about 50 minutes. Once you are on Phuket you may visit other smaller islands that surround Phuket, such as: Phi Phi Islands, Lon Island, Coral Island, Mai Ton Island and others.
There is also Sirinat National Park that is located near Phuket International Airport. This national park covers an area of 90 square kilometers. There are numbers of interesting places to visit; one of them is i.e. Mangrove Forest.
Another large island that is famous for its natural beauty is Ko Samui. It is almost literally an island of coconuts and forested hills, and is fast becoming a resort of international stature. Mu Koh Angthong National Park is a park that comprises some 40 islands northwest of Koh Samui and covers some 250 square kilometers. Major park islands largely towering, verdant rock masses encircled by clear seas, include Mae Koh, which has a beautiful beach and an emerald saltwater lake called Thale Nai.
Ko Chang is located near the town of Trat, to the southeast from Bangkok. It is a second biggest island in Thailand and is still fairly underdeveloped, especially if we speak from the tourism development point of view. Ko Chang is one of 47 islands that make up Ko Chang National Park. This park occupies the total 650 sq. kilometers.
Ko Kut is the farthest island from the coast of Trat. Its size ranks as the fourth of all Thailand's islands or the second to Ko Chang in Trat. It is again rather a less developed island, with only a small bit of infrastructure and tourism developments.

Question: Some more information about transportation in Bangkok airport to downtown. More information about city public transportation.

Answer: There are buses going to the Bangkok's CBD from the airport. It costs app. THB 200 and take about an hour to reach CBD.

There are also taxis and they would cost between THB 200 and THB 300 to reach the CBD area.
Besides taxis, there are other kinds of transportation in Bangkok.
Tuk-Tuk: Three-wheeled open-air vehicles taking two passengers (three or four at a squeeze), Tuk-tuks offer an interesting ride! Best for shorter trips during off-peak hours. Settle the fare before proceeding. It should cost less than the price of a comparable journey by taxi-meter.
Buses: Bangkok has an extensive bus service with routes serving every part of the city. There are both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned vehicles, which provide an extremely cheap way of getting around town.
River Taxi: Taxis that are even more unusual, though equally convenient, are the river taxis that ply the Chao Phraya River. Some are just cross river ferries, but others serve the many landing stages on both banks and cover a route that goes up as far as the northern suburb of Nonthaburi.
Skytrain: It is a modern and new elevated rail based mass transit system. It does not cover a large area though and runs mostly in the business area. For more details about the skytrain and its route, please visit http://www.bts.co.th/e-inforoutes.html

Question: We will be visiting Thailand for total of 24 days. What should see in the north before we start heading to central and southern Thailand?

Answer: There are popular 'Jungle Treks', lasting from 2 to 7 days, which are taking visitors through forested mountains and high valleys and meadows, and include visits to remoter high-altitude hilltribe settlements for overnight stays. The best guides are hilltribe youths who customarily speak English, Thai and at least three tribal dialects.
Treks commonly feature travel by foot, sometimes by boat, elephant-back, horse-back or jeep, frequently a combination of two or three modes of transportation.
